This time, Grandpa had a special treat for the puppies. He had ordered something that came in a big box. As soon as he was done with his water bottle, Mr. M went to work on the box, with quite a bit of help from the other puppies. Some jobs require teamwork. Once the box was taken care of, they went right back to work on the bottles again.
The puppies have a routine now that they go through when we go to Grandma and Grandpa's house. Grandma puts all of their empty water bottles that need flattening in the pantry in the kitchen, where they are easily accessible. The puppies know where the water bottles are. So, any time we go there, they go get their water bottles and proceed to flatten, or at least mangle, them. Wednesday, we went to the vet to pick up their monthly heart worm prevention medicine. We still go in every month so that they can get weighed. After the vet, we went to Grandma and Grandpa's for a visit. Mr. M went straight to the water bottles and picked out one to chew on. He got to work right away, making sure to earn himself some treats from Grandma. Of course, the puppies were all glad to help with the cleanup efforts. We made the mistake of playing with Miss B and then with Miss M with the broom when they were small. Now, whenever they see a broom, they instantly slip into playing mode- especially when a woman has the broom since it was Mom's bright idea to play chase the broom. The boys don't chase the broom as much. Mr. C politely excused himself from helping with the cleanup efforts so that he could help Grandma in the kitchen. Finally, after all of the hard work, Mr. M just couldn't keep his eyes open any longer. So he decided to take a nap in the middle of the floor so that he could monitor the progress of the cleanup from time to time without actually having to get up.
So, one of the things we have learned about puppies, or rather re-learned, is that boxes are way cooler than regular toys. Every time we get a box, the puppies make it their personal mission to shred and flatten it. We don't mind. It gives them something fun to do and breaks the box down at the same time. Before we had puppies, we had to break our boxes down ourselves. Notice how the pieces of the box are nice and small. They weren't even done in this picture. We ended up with small pieces of box all over the dining room and living room, but all we had to do was collect them and put them in the bin- no folding and jumping on boxes or pulling them apart. The puppies take care of all of that. They are a box demolishing machine! Of course, the cats weren't about to let the puppies have all the fun. Kitty P sat under the table grabbing the odd piece of cardboard that happened her way. Kitty S stalked the puppies from the table. We've been getting into the holiday spirit around here, and the puppies have been giving us a hand with the decorating. They are very diligent in their efforts to shred things in the living room. As demonstrated by Mr.M below. They are all very considerate in making sure that no treats get left behind to clutter up the kitchen counter. They also offer to be taste testers on anything Mom is cooking- you know, just to make her feel like she is doing a good job at baking for the holidays. They check out any stray boxes laying around the house to make sure that no gifts are left behind. They also make sure to warm up the bed for Mom and Dad. It's like an electric blanket but without the electricity. Only really, it's like having a fossil fuel powered blanket. I'm sure they violate EPA emissions rules at times.
We've decided that Mr. C missed his calling in life. With his gracefulness, he should have been a ballerina puppy. (That was sarcastic of course). After bringing the littles home, Mom worried about them falling off of the bed. Even though none of the dogs sleep in the bed, occasionally we bring them onto the bed for a few minutes just to snuggle before sending them to their own beds. For about the first month that we had them home, Mom would wake up every night worried that we had forgotten to put them in their kennel and afraid that they had fallen off the bed- especially Mr. M since he was the smallest. She would pat around the bed in the dark trying to feel for the puppies, and Dad would ask what she was doing and then reassure her that they were safely asleep in their kennel. In reality, Mom should have been more worried about Mr. C (currently the biggest of the puppies at 53 pounds). As it turns out, he is not in the least bit graceful, and to make matters worse, he likes to roll over on his back to sleep. Last weekend, Mr. C and the two littles were resting cozily on the bed- Miss B had decided that there were just way too many puppies on the bed and had gone back to her fleece pillow to stretch out by herself. Mr. C was laying precariously close (and parallel) to the edge of the bed. All of a sudden there was a loud BANG! CRASH! and just like that, Mr. C was no longer on the bed. Apparently, he had rolled over onto his back but ran out of bed and rolled off onto the floor. Oh the humanity! He snorted and walked over to nurse his bruised ego on his fleece pillow next to Miss B's. Miss S was extremely concerned about all of this and ran over to Mom for safety. She had a hard time falling back to sleep after that. Mr. M just looked up and then rolled back onto his back next to Mom's legs. The worst part is that this is not the first time he's rolled off the bed. He fell off once before when the littles had been with us for about two weeks! So graceful and dignified! In other news, we got a box. As it turns out, the box was more interesting to the puppies than the dog food that came in it. |
